Azalea leaf and flower gall. This is the most common disease of azaleas this month. The disease, which also occurs on rhododendron, is caused by the fungus Exobasidium vaccinii. The galls are also known as “pinkster apples” and are eaten by some. On azaleas the leaves become thick and fleshy; green at first and later white. On rhododendrons and some azaleas, the flowers will also be affected.
Control: This disease will do little harm to the plant and can be controlled by handpicking.
