“I’m very concerned about our new budget,” School Superintendent Robert Estabrook told the Rappahannock School Board at its special meeting June 22. “This is very tight. There’s little margin at all.”
The board had just heard Sam Rosenthal, their insurance consultant, analyze insurance proposals. The proposals had been submitted at the regular board meeting June 14, but the decision had been deferred until later to give the respresentative from Industrial Insurance Management a chance to review and recommend each submission.
Rosenthal had disappointing news for the hardpressed body: the $15,000 budgeted for complete insurance of Rappahannock’s schools now looks more like a $21,000 expense, extra money hard to come by from the pared-down 1983-84 school budget. Rosenthal had told the board earlier during the budget process, that he could cut the budgeted $21,000 down to $15,000 by releasing the insurance needs of the school to a competitive process. After reviewing the seven proposals, however, the funds needed were backed up to the original level.
The insurance company selected by Rosenthal, Dejarnette and Paul of Richmond, estimated that, with the Workmen’s Compensation coverage by Liberty Mutual, they could fulfill the school’s needs for $21,647.
“This is by no means a final figure,” Rosenthal said.
