Chapman achieves this seeming impossibility. . . Under the magic of his hands, the mammoth machine becomes flexible and subtly sensitive, it sings with the legato and cantabile of a violin, and with phrasing as delicate or poignant as that of the human voice, with rhythm as deftly characterized as that of a master pianist.
In recognition of his artistry, over 100 carillon compositions by 20 some American and foreign composers have been written especially for Mr. Chapman to perform from Luray’s tower.
The Luray carillon consists of 47 bells. The largest weights 7,040 pounds and has a six foot diameter; the smallest weighs 12'/pounds.
Luray’s bells were produced at the Taylor bellfoundrv in England which was established in 1:500. Officially known as the Belle Brown Northcott Memorial, the bells were dedicated in 19:57.
The music of the bells is best heard at 200 to 200 yards from the tower at Lu ray Caverns. The public is invited to attend the free recitals. Ample parking is provided without charge.
