There was a sightseeing day with an early morning tour of the White House. We went to the basement area of the Museum of Natural History and saw the artifacts a friend from Fairbanks. Alaska. hail brought for the Children’s Discovery room, including walrus teeth ivory, bone and even a few walrus w hiskers. We also saw the exhibits of mineral rocks in gorgeous colors, exotic sea shells and corals. We visited the new part of the museum w ith its modern art, the Madison building, a new addition of the Congressional Library and the Botanic Gardens, full of blooming orchids of every size and color.
There wasn’t time to see everything, or to learn everything, but I difl get many new ideas and found sources of information that 1 or others may need in the future. I’d like to pass some of my Washington impressions on to others:
—politics is the art of compromise,
—fight for what you believe,
—there is a shortage of people trained to work in geriatrics, a w ide open career field,
—share,
—keep active,
—contact your congressman often, become his friend,
—seniors have much to offer in volunteer and helping situations.
The real question is not what government is going to do for us but what are we going to do for others.
