Though we heard many fine speeches and saw meaningful presentations, it was a week of fun as well as work. Sitting still for an hour was new for many of us but there was time for walking briskly to the day's programs, a distance of six or seven blocks each morning, and Washington is beautiful in May. There were lunches in the Senate and House office building cafeterias, to which we each had tickets as we were considered as employees ot our congressmen.
We had lots of time during the coffee doughnut break to chat with interesting folk from far off places. 1 met a good friend of my cousin’s in Arizona, and made several good friends for myself. All this besides visits each day to the office of Mr. Robinson w here I had a chance to ask him questions and enjoyed several friendly conversations. His office staff were most helpful too, and I learned much from them.
there were receptions by the American Care Association and the Republican National Committee with a wealth of exotic foods and lots of good talk. The Democratic National Committee was host fora picnic lunch in the Cannon Office building’s handsome caucus room.
The speaker at this event was the veteran Senator Claude Pepper of Florida, a bM-year old and a long time friend of the elderly. He talked lor about 30 minutes with no notes and with great enthusiasm. He was an inspiration to everyone. His theme was lower costs for Medicare, lower hospital rates, more Social Security and a good life for everyone. Some one was heard to say, "He is a fine gentleman, but he wants to give the store away." Rut he is fun to listen to anyway!
