Motorists will find their fees going up. All motor vehicle registration fees will increase by $1, with onequarter of the money going to localities to help pay for emergency medical services and for EMS equipment.
Persons who want to register to vote will have an easier time of it. Effective Friday, registrars will be able to go into contiguous counties and cities to register voters. The registrar will only be able to register persons from his or her locality, however.
The bill was designed to help people who work in another county or city and have difficulty registering to vote in their home areas during working hours.
No major tax increases came out of the 1983 legislative session, but there were a number of changes in tax law.
One of those changes will affect taxpayers who want to appeal their real estate assessments. Effective Jan. 1, localities will have to establish local boards of equalization after general reassessments of real estate.
A taxpayer unsatisfied with assessments given to his or her real estate by the local Commissioner of the Revenue will be able to appeal to the board of equalization.
The Natural Death Act also will go into effect Friday. Approved after much debate, the act will allow terminally ill persons, or their designated surrogates, to direct physicians to turn off life-prolonging devices.
