Several congressmen spoke to us on subjects related to the committee they represented.

There were speakers from the Environmental Protective Agency who informed us of their efforts on behalf of clean air, clean water and assistance in compliance with the laws in small businesses. Miss Jo Ann Ross from the Office of Family Assistance spoke about aid to dependent children, low income energy assistance and what could be expected for the aging from this agency.

We were told how a bill was passed or a law was made. The chairman of a committee is the key and he decides whether a bill will be reviewed or tabled. His is a very responsible position. The committees are the backbone of the government. We learned that their work is more important than what goes on in the Senate or House chambers.

There were sessions on making up a budget. It seemed to boil down to what can be done with the 20 percent left after defense and entitlements were taken care of. Republicans were said to want money for defense while democrats wanted money for entitle
