When my appointment as senior intern was first announced, peopled asked, "What does that mean?" I couldn’t tell them very much, but after one week of lessons on how the government operates, 1 found that there is much more than meets the eye in the newspapers and on TV. 1 didn’t learn everything there is to know about government, but I absorbed as much as I could in the short time.
The intern program is sponsored by a group of congressmen, headed by Senator William V. Roth, Jr., of Delaware and Congressman Tony Coelho of California. Their office assistants, Gayle DiMondi and Heidi Hicks, were in charge of the sessions and tried to keep everyone in line, seeing that meetings did not last too long, that speakers were on time and projectors were operating (they never were). These two had a big job and they did it well.
The whole week was spent in learning about government programs that would benefit the aging. We learned of our opportunities, rights and privileges. One thing that was often repeated was “write to your congressman.” or “call him
