One of the judges is the Channel four weather watcher for the Sperryville area, Dennis Wingfield. He says he will notify the News staff as soon as the first measurable precipitation hits his yard—by telephone at two in the morning if necessary.

For those who want to base guesses on past statistics, Wingfield has a few hints. The first measurable snow fell early in the morning of December 12 last year. It continued snowing through the day until there weas 4inches on the ground.

Wingfield called it “a one shot deal." On the 18 there was no snow. On the 12 there had been a “trace"— enough to see, but not enough to measure in the official Sperryville rain gage.
