The show was directed by Bernice Pearson, an energetic lady who descended upon Rappahannock with laundry baskets full of sheet music for show tunes. She leads The Young Dominion over the year, taking them to shows in a five state area and to the Virginia State Fair in Richmond each year. The Young Dominion is a 4H performing arts group for students age 9-18. The group started in Fauquier in 1975 with just 14 members, the first of its kind in the country.
The experience brings out the best in each, Pearson says — some are super in every way right from the start. Others “can’t carry a tune in a bucket with a top on it” but can dance up a storm. She just doesn’t let them get near a live mike. They learn to be realistic about their abilities and to polish their best assets.
Pearson spent Friday night and Saturday polishing the numbers to be presented by Rappahannock performers. They all learned interpretive dance, the lyrics to several country songs, and some basic costume design. By show time they were pretty confident and raring to go.
