A Rappahannock native son came
through a close political race for the state senate a winner, when Senator Curry Carter edged his opponent Winston B. Wine by a narrow 212 votes for the seat in the Staunton area.
Senator Curry w’as brought up on Gay Street in Washington.
Carson B. Johnson was elected as justice of the peace in the Piedmont District with 135 votes polled and Margaret Compton was reelected justice in Hampton with 149.
It was the 14th anniversary of the Rappahannock New s, but the editors said they w'ere so busy w ith election coverage, they “forgot all about it and did not have time to celebrate” until the following week. The first issue of this paper, they recalled, was published on November 3, 1949.
It was the fifth paper to be published in the county. Another Rappahannock News was first printed in 1877. Then came the “Blue Ridge Echo” in 1878, followed by “The Call” and then “The Blue Ridge Guide” (1886-1936).
