Poet, author, former U. S. Senator from Minnesota and candidate for the presidency, Eugene McCarthy now lives in the F. T. Valley near Slate Mills. marv as well known politician and he lost forever, as in the case of George Romney in 19(>b. He can go in relatively unknown and emerge as a political force.
The important thing in N. H. primaries is not heating your opponents but beating the odds or the point spread of the political experts. Thus in the contest between Senator Muskie and Senator McGovern in 1972, the experts said that Muskie, principally because he came from neighboring Maine, had to defeat McGovern decisively. As I recall, they said he had to get HO percent or more to have a meaningful victory. Muskie did run ahead of McGovern, but he did not beat the point spread and was called a loser by the press.
Actually, he should have been given say a ten point handicap because he was from Maine. Robert Frost, in writing in one of his poems of relationships among neighbors in New England, said, "good fences make good neighbors." The fences between Maine and New Hampshire are not all good. Disagreements are significant, even in some seemingly unimportant things as the treatment of porcupines. In Maine they are protected. In New Hampshire there is a bounty on them.
