Latest figures released by assistant superintendent Bill Loftis shows a continuing trend in decreasing visits to the Shenandoah National Park.
Exactly 32,200 fewer people visited the park last month than during October, 1982. The visits were down 10,000 in September.
The latest monthly travel report from the park’s information service shows 365,100 total visits during October, 1983, compared to 397,300 during the same period last year. This is a decrease of 8.1 percent.
Overnight stays also were down with 52,374 reported for last month, compared to 55,482 in October, 1982.
To date, the calendar year visits are closer. So far this year 1,719,600 people have visited the park compared with 1,749,000 bv this time last year.
In other statistics, Loftis reports a maximum temperature at Big Meadows last month of 73 degrees. The low was 21. Total precipitation measured 10.43 inches.
