“Buying Virginia Products Helps Virginians" is the motto of the Virginia Department of agriculture and consumer services in its first mail-order directory of companies which will ship Virginia food for holiday gifts.
VDACS marketing specialist Anna Atkins says the HO companies listed in the directory “all have one thing in common and that is a quality product. Most of them began as small family businesses. Though some may have evolved into large factory operations, they are still family-oriented and dedicated to quality.”
The description might fit many Rappahannock County businesses as well, yet local merchants are conspicuous in their absence although the featured products are available here to Christmas shoppers. Apples, hams, smoked turkeys, wines, honey and lamb and wool goods all make super holiday surprises and Rappahannock residents don’t have to travel to Winchester or Richmond to buy them. Yet Rappahannock’s only listing is Flint Hill’s Farfelu Vineyard.
Two area novelties listed are available in county gift shops and fruit stands. Those are the* sparkling cider produced by the Linden Beverage (Company and apple candies from Winchester’s Shenandoah (,'andy Company.
Area companies which will ship gifts of “good taste” all over the country listed in the brochure are the Hudson Ham House and Rapidan River Vineyards of Culpeper, Harmony Hollow Orchard and (j. C. Hunter Apiaries of Front Royal, and Farfelu Vineyard on Route ♦147 in Flint Hill.
