Standing stage right to see the Friendship Follies Saturday night gave a different slant of the Boosters Club fundraising extravaganza. It was a backstage show about a show being produced.
“Smile!” was the last word each performing Rappahannock student heard before running out under the bright lights to join The Young Dominion in the opening number. Sometimes they forgot to smile or muffed a few words, but for the most part they moved smoothly through the two hour show — from the time Julie Burke belted out “That’s Entertainment” until the full past — 36 participants of The Young Dominion including Julie Burke and Tara Fisher from Rappahannock, 40 more Rappahannock students and 14 local adults — sang “America” on a stage crowded with red, white and blue — and star-spangled smiles.
It wasn’t always so smooth in the wings as it seemed out front. “Is ‘Amazing Grace’ before ‘Hobo’? one student kept asking with increasing consternation as he changed his clothes three times to keep up with the conflicting responses.
