New Hampshire is a modest state, not known for exorbitant or tall stories. It is suspicious of promises. It does admit to having the highest mountain, Mt. Washington, but only as highest in the lowest mountain chain in the country. The state tree is a simple, with any adjective, birch. New Hampshire is always on guard, especially in the winter time. It does not trust anyone with much power. One of the smallest states in the union, it has the largest number of members in its state legislature of all the states.

It is hard to find a single issue resident. Most persons in New Hampshire can do at least two things and therefore have dual interests. Signs along the road indicate such combined talents as digging and cabinet making — one job for summer and one for winter — and in the case of women, alterations and preserves.

Although New Hampshire is a careful state, law and order is not a serious problem. Its government finances itself largely with revenue from taxes on the vices or near vices of visitors from other states. It taxes beer and hard liquor, tobacco, betting on horses. It taxes hotel rooms and restaurant meals, and runs a state administered lottery twice a year.

A candidate in New Hampshire has greater need for a driver skilled in driving in snow and on ice than for a good press man or political advisor.

Except for its prolonged cold and its effect on New Hampshire residents, the Rappahannock environment is not very different from that of New Hampshire, nor is the spirit of the people. Possibly we should develop a Rappahannock primary as the first in the nation or as the most significant.
