Is
For Lovers
By GEORGE BOWLES
It’s not exactly the kind of issue which would be likely to topple nations or empires, but Virginians, durihgAhese balmy autumn days, are sharply divided over a question of considerable moment.
That question is whether or not the Commonwealth’s well-known tourism motto, “Virginia is for Lovers,” should be abandoned as a part of the state’s new travel promotion theme, “These Are Exciting Times in Virginia.”
The answer, at least in the view of the travel industry, is a matter of no small consequence. Tourism is, after all, the state’s second largest industry (after manufacturing). It generates about $13.3 billion in business per year, or about 1.9 percent of the total amount spent annually on travel in the nation.
