RAAC holiday celebrations
The Rappahannock Association For The Arts and The Community (RAAC) announced plans for their traditional community Christmas celebration and their annual fund-raising dance.
The Community Christmas celebration is scheduled for December 21, beginning at 6:00 p.m. at the courthouse with the lighting of the tree. This annual ceremony is special to the residents of the town of Washington, and RAAC directors hope that people from all over Rappahannock will join them this year.
“Stringing the lights on the tree in the bitter cold is an accomplishment in itself,” said RAAC president Frank Reynolds. “For years, Sam and Waldren O’Connor have seen to this and preservered until every light is in exactly the right place.”
After the lighting there will be singing. Then the crowd will go to the Gay Street Theatre, munching on cookies and sipping on cider w'hile watching tile heartwarming seasonal tribute prepared entirely by Rappahannock friends and neighbors.
This year there will be a children’s Christmas dance, appropriate holiday readings, live instrumental music and singing.
All the events of the evening are free of charge, including the showing of the movies “Scrooge” following the live performances. The movie is provided courtesy of the Rush River Company.
RAAC’s fundraiser this holiday season will be at Oasis Vineyard in Huntly, on December 28, featuring The Mystery Band, a regional band with a loyal local following, playing dance music of the last three generations of dancers: “from Andrews Sisters to Pointer Sisters; from big band to boogie, they play it better than anyone I’ve heard,” said a lifelong fan.
Dancing will be in the tasting room at Oasis, off Route 636 in Huntly. A choice of fine Oasis wines, soft drinks, desserts and hors d’oeuvrcs w ill fortify the dancers from 8:00 until midnight.
“This will be a wonderful winter evening” said dance chairman Diana Bird. “People of all ages will be dancing until midnight in a beautiful setting in front of a roaring fire to the best dance music the area has to offer.”
Bird said that dance reservations should be made early and those interested may do so by mailing a request and check to RAAC, P.O. Box 24, Washington, VA 22747. Many county residents will be receiving a mailed invitation and should respond quickly.
