Some of the farms will even cut and load the tree for the customer or will furnish saws and twine. Virginia trees can also be purchased by mail, arriving fresh and unscathed within three days as far away as Florida.
If trees are purchased already cut from a lot, advises Nichols, be sure and ask specifically for a Virginia-grown tree, which is more likely to be much fresher than an imported tree, many of which are cut as early as October or early November.
Trees cut by consumers right on the farm, however, last much longer and can be cut as early as right after Thanksgiving, often lasting until after New Year’s. As many as onethird of the Virginia Christmas tree farms’ trees are sold this way directly to the consumer, says Nichols.
