This week, the Varsity and Junior Varsity Basketball teams from Wakefield opened their fourth season.
In the first game, the Junior Varsity fell to Randolph-Macon Academy of Front Royal in a closely played and hard-fought game. Coach Gary Leake, although disappointed with the loss, was pleased with the team’s overall performance.
The Wakefield players outscored the opposing team from the field but could not seem to connect on the foul shots. Randolph-Macon meanwhile missed only three foul shots during the game.
Three players: Carey Maar, of Front Royal, with 11 points; Jerry McDowell, of Warrenton, with 9 points; and Michael King, of Midland, with 7 points accounted for all but 5 of the team’s 32 points as the Junior Varsity lost 36-32. Leake commented, “We played exceptionally well. I think we will have a rewarding season.”
The Varsity team traveled to Highland View Academy in Hagerstown, Maryland. Leake, commenting on the 54-43 loss said, “I thik we lost because it was an opening game
