Mayor Peter Kramer called a special meeting of the Washington Town Council on December 5 to address questions raised in a letter by Barbara Wood. Mrs. Wood is objecting to the proposed Krebser and Martin Partnership building for which a special use permit was granted by Town Council on November 13.

The letter states that the lot, on which the structure is to be built, was incorrectly advertised.

In her letter Mrs. Wood states that “the request for a Special Use Permit to construct the building was for Lot No. 41-Block Tax Map . 20A1-11 lb.” She continues, “(i)n fact the town council granted a Special Use Permit for, and the owners wanted a permit for, Lot. No. 113.”

The proposed 1,625 one level structure would be situated beside the Rappahannock Medical Center.

In her letter, Mrs. Wood also argues against the building’s proposed parking plan. “The town ordinance has a parking requirement for 1 space for each 100 sq. ft. of building. If the council examines the actual space available for parking on the proposed site, it will find that an area to accommodate the number of cars for the already two existing buddings and the proposed building, as deemed necessary for the square footage, does not exist.”

The letter also argues that the permit was issued when a variance was needed. “It is my understanding that the Va. Code does not permit the town council to grant a variance. Can the town council legally grant a Special Use Permit in a case where a variance is called for?”

Mayor Kramer believes that the original Special use permit has to be invalidated. “I as Mayor feel this is what needs to be done and would like a motiori to nullify our special use permit."

The mayor stated at the meeting that it was his opinion that “we need to advertise for the correct lot number and re-run the ad.” He also said, “Dr. Krebser has expressed his desire to re-run the ad properly.”
