Be creative and make your own Christmas tree ornaments with dried flowers and ribbon from the House of Dried Flowers in Sperryville. Straw flowers are $1.50 per bunch, artemesia is $2.00 per bunch and both statis and baby’s breath are $3.50 a bunch. Red velvet ribbon is 25 to 50 cents per yard, depending on width.
If you know someone who is the literary type, how about buying that last issue of the Washington Star (circa August 7, 1981) for $2.00 at Sperryville’s Carriage House Antiques. This shop also has an old copy of “On the Good Ship Lollypop” songsheet for about $2.50 - just right for Shirley Temple fans. (If you give this to somebody who won’t stop singing the tune, Carriage House also sells pine-cone fire starters for a dollar each - the songsheet will be gone in a jiff!)
You might consider ‘The $2.00 Jewelry Box’ at Twice Remembered in Washington for charming stocking stuffers for mom, sister or yourself! It’s the sparkling earrings, necklaces and pins that are for sale, not the box. Twice Remembered also sells old hankies and scarves, including some Scottish wool plaids, for under $5.00.
And wTho could not resist the oldfashioned Christmas candy now selling at W&J Grocery, the Washington Cash Store, Haekley’s Store and Burke’s Grocery. They’re featuring coconut ices, peanut squares, vanilla dips and, of course, candy canes. But remember - the candy canes on your tree are fair game for all of Santa's elves, with or without pointed green caps!
