Seventh District Congressman French Slaughter joined a bipartisan group of over 200 Congressmen in support of the balanced budget amendment to the Constitution to break the deadlock over federal deficit spending. The group held a press conference in Washington today to announce that this amendment now has the support of a majority of the House of Representatives, including Slaughter.
“Debate over the specifics of the Gramm/Rudman deficit reduction measure may have stalled,” said Slaughter, “but the fact that Congress is discussing ways to decrease the deficit rather than increase spending is certainly a good sign. Unfortunately, so far Congress has failed to take the necessary action to eliminate the deficits.
“The American taxpayer has forced Congress to realize that a balanced Federal budget is our top priority. If all goes as we hope, we will meet that priority and guarantee that we spend within our income in the future. With a majority of the House (220 members) signed on as cosponsors of this amendment, we are making progress towards the two-thirds vote needed to pass the amendment which will put us on the road towards fiscal responsibility.”
