members in the last eight years. -From the Shenandoah Valley down 'through Southwestern Virginia, the western part of the state is ideal for growing the trees because of the mountainous climate and suitable soil and terrain. “The Christmas tree industry is very compatible with Virginia agriculture,” states Virginia Christmas Tree Growers Association President Louis Nichols, “because it utilizes marginally usable land, keeping it in a productive state.” The industry also manages to keep numerous people employed both full and part time in a part of the state not known for numerous job opportunities.
The best way to get the freshest tree possible, says Nichols, is to cut your own.
