Holiday season traditions and rituals can strengthen family ties.
Studies show that strong families have certain rituals or traditions which assist them in maintaining the family group, said Paula W. Dail, Virginia Tech Extension specialist in human development.
Traditions and rituals present a picture of predictability and expectation for the family members. - Because there are distances between the members in many families today, it is important to consider ways to maintain the traditions and rituals and pass them along to each succeeding generation, Dail said.
Here are some suggestions:
Engage in storytelling. Both children and adults like to listen to stories. When older family members are encouraged, they are often willing participants in this activity. It allows the older members to reminisce, which is an important activity for older adults and passes along the important traditions to the younger generation. And everyone has many pleasant memories of storytelling time.
Keep written records. This activity can take many forms. If all family members are committed to maintaining the family history, then they can be reminded to keep all letters that members write to one another. In addition, if individuals are so in
