A rash of fires last weekend destroyed a 100 year-okl mansion and severely damaged two other county homes and a business just across the line in Culpeper County.
Just after noon on Saturday, Amissville Co. 3, along with companies from Culpeper and Fauquier counties, was called to Antiques by George on Rt. 211 at the intersection of Rt.621 in Culpeper County. The location is just over the Rappahannock County line, and the Amissville company runs calls in that area as part of a mutual aid agreement with Culpeper and Fauquier.
The fire gutted the rear of the building and caused serious damage to the front of the building as well. There were no injuries.
Two minor fires were reported Saturday afternoon; a chimney fire at the Piney River Campground and a dumpster fire at the Scrabble dump. Washington, Sperryville, Amissville and Castleton responded to those calls.
At about 12:45 a.m. Sunday, a fire was reported at the Asher Lohraan residence, on Rt. 522 south of Woodville. When firefighters from Sperryville arrived, they found the back of the house fully involved, according to Chief Ricky Lillard.
The house, an old log cabin, presented problems for the volunteers. It had burned for some time before it was seen by a neighbor, and the fire had spread inside the walls, making it difficult to suppress the flames. The Lohmans, who live in Arlington, were not at home at the time.
