Mr. and Mrs. Pivamik had a positive outlook on the experience. They said that officials of the diocese were “upbeat” and expected to go forward with a building program to replace the retreat center. “We don’t give up,” he said. “We expect to be a going concern again soon.”
They both also had thanks for the support received from their neighbors. “The outpouring from the community has just been fantastic,” Mr. Pivarnik said. “Bless their hearts,” added his wife.
Damage was estimated at several hundred thousand dollars. Again, no one was iryured in the fire.
Another major fire destroyed a workshop on Rt. 626 in Castleton Sunday night. According to Sheriff John Henry Woodward, the structure was apparently being used as a residence, although the occupants were not at home. The property is owned by Ruby Gray of Fairfax.
Sheriff Woodward said that the roof had caved in when firefighters from Castleton, Sperryville and Salem arrived. He said that the cause of the fire is undetermined, and the damage was so extensive that it might not be possible to find out the cause. f
There were no injuries in that fire either, although several animals belonging to the occupants were believed to have died in the blaze.
