The Rappahannock County unit of the Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Service announces that it has a number of programs available for area farmers.
Agricultural Conservation Program: A program designed to help farmers reduce soil loss, conserve water and solve other conservation and environmental problems. ACP offers cost-share assistance for conservation practices which might otherwise not be implemented.
Cost-share is based on a percentage of the average cost of eligible practice components. Farmers who meet ASCS low-income requirements may be eligible for a higher cost-share allocation.
ACP will cover the following practices and projects: Establishment or improvement of permanent vegetative cover, strip cropping systems, grazing land protection, cropland protective cover, critical area cover, livestock watering facilities, sod waterways, planting or improving forest trees, and animal waste disposal facilities.
The emphasis of the program is on soil conservation, so ASCS recommends application for assistance with the area of each farm which causes the most soil erosion. All requests are subject to county ASCS committee consideration, and no cost-shares will be paid on projects begun before committee approval is granted.
