local funding. That represents a 23 percent hike over the current level of local support, and with one cent on the tax rate bringing in, about $22,000, Would have meant a tax increase of around 20 cents for schools alone.
At last week’s budget work session, the board trimmed close to $100,000 from various line items. This Tuesday, $10,175 of that was restored for sabbatical leave.
“The system certainly benefits when teachers further their education,” said board member Randall Updike. “We certainly need to reinstate this... It's an investment in the future.”
Chairman Beverly Massie pointed out that a teacher receiving money through this program must stay in the Rappahannock schools for three years or else repay the sabbatical stipend.
Also on Tuesday, the board dropped an aide position but with the proviso that the individual be offered a contract, with fringe benefits, as a fUll-time substitute teacher.
The budget as proposed for the purchase of two new school buses in 1987-88. Last week, board member Bill Oliver asked for information on the possibility of putting new engines in high mileage buses as an alternative to buying new buses.
