In other cases, Kevin L. Simmons, 22, and Craig E. Vandevender, 24, both of Manassas, were apprehended during the early morning hours on November 19, 1986, at Hawksbill Gap by Ranger James Surdukowski. In a trial Dec. 18 before Magistrate Crigler, Vandevender and Simmons were found guilty of illegal possession of firearms . Each was fined $50 plus court costs, placed on probation for one year and prohibited from entering the Park for one year. A third person in this group is being sought at this time.
Mark Slabaugh, 47, of Fairfax, and Douglas Crooks, 30, of Triangle, were apprehended on Nov. 18,1986, in the Rapidan area by Rangers William Quinn and John Segar. Magistrate Crigler found Crooks guilty of illegal hunting in a trial Dec. 18. Crooks was fined $200 plus court costs, required to pay $200 replacement cost for the deer, placed on one year probation and prohibited from entering the Park during his probation period. On Jan. 15, 1987, Slabaugh was also convicted of illegal hunting, and ordered to pay $200 replacement costs for the deer
