Their effort went for naught, however, as the visitors hit the Panthers for another three runs in the top of the sixth, then hung on against a determined Rappahannock team, refusing to allow the Panthers any more scores on their way to a 9-5 victory.
Leading the Panthers in hitting Tuesday were Doug Smith, who went 2 for 4 with a single, a double and one RBI. Wesley Jenkins also contributed two RBIs, while going 1 for 3 at bat.
Doug Smith was tagged with the loss after pitching three innings. Thomas Williams, in his first action as a reliever, pitched two innings, giving up three runs. Greg Smith finished up, “and was very impressive,” according to Coach Leake.
Despite the loss, Coach Leake was optimistic about the Panther effort in both games. “Fighting back from that 6-0 deficit says a lot for a young team,” he said. “It would have been easy for them to just fold in that situation. I’m pleased with the performance of the team overall, especially being a young team.
“They stayed in the game against a team which is ranked high in the district, and which returned eight starters. That’s a positive sign for the future.”
The Panthers’ next three games are on the road. They face Central on Friday, a team which has just dropped from AA to A, and which Coach Leake expects to give the district a rough time, if the success of their basketball team is any indication, he said. Tuesday finds the Panthers on the road against Strasburg. Both gajnes begin at 4 p.m.
Following a game April 7 at Page County, the Panthers return home on Friday, April 10, against George Mason. That game begins at 4:30 p.m.
