Michael Massie announced on Tuesday that he is a candidate for the Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors from Hampton District. “I’d like to try to keep Rappahannock County the way it is — that's the main reason I’m running,” Mr. Massie said, in explaining his bid for the board post.
Presently, Mr. Massie is the only candidate who has announced for Hampton District supervisor. NewbiU Miller, who represents the district now, has not yet announced whether he will run for re-election in November.
Mr. Massie, 31, is a Rappahannock native who is the chairman of the Landfill Advisory Committee created by the Board of Supervisors last fall to assist in finding a site for a new landfill. He said in an interview Tuesday that he has been considering whether to run for supervisor for some time.
‘You reach a point in your life when you want to give something back to the community. That’s how I feel now,” he said, explaining what motivated his decision. “Last fall, when I became involved with the landfill committee, the idea came to get into public service. That’s what the Board of Supervisors is — public service.
“If you like living here, you need to do something to keep it a place worth living in. There’s no place like it where I would like to live — I don’t want to lose it." But, he added, “It’s going to take everyone working together to ■ keep it that way.” **= i
“Only by joining together,” Mr. Massie continued, “can the residents of Rappahannock hope to keep the county as it is. I see divisiveness as harmfiil. I hope to draw voters from a cross-section of the community: young, old, newcomers, established families, white and black.”
