plauded for producing the Kancouran dance group - but why were there so few black people in the audience to see it?
When we open up our cliques to share our creative expressions, an excitement happens which generates even greater creativity - as well as spiritual unity. In the March art show at the Middle St. Gallery, artiste asked friends who are not mem- \' bers of the cooperative artists group to show their work. This was a good impulse. It gave new people access to gallery space and widened our exposure to cultural expressions from all over. . It was a delight to see a large oil painting of a black woman as one entered the front room. Opening the gallery to different people also brought us the photographic images of Russian photographer Edik Gladkov, images which showed me that there are similarities between rural Russians and poor rural Virginians. The diversity of the new show also brought us the work of a local mixblood woman, Phenix Metis. Phenix’s crystal wands reflect a combination of ancient spiritual art with modern concern for creating peace and harmony among the peoples of the planet earth.
It would be great if a future show at the Middle St. Gallery featured the work of local black artists. I would like to see our local cultural events reflect more of the diversity of our community.
