An estimated 900 people, including some 400 police officers, paid tribute to Virginia State Police Trooper H. Lee Henderson in Front Royal Friday.
The crowd, which overflowed Turner Robertshaw Funeral Home, stood outside in the bright morning sun and heard the trooper eulogized as a man who "believed that the law was a good thing for society; so for him being a trooper was not just a job, it was something he was called to be,” in the words of Rev. Bruce Stevens, Trooper Henderson’s pastor at Buckton Presbyterian Church. "Because of his belief he brought integrity to the law.”
State Police troopers from as far away as New York and California, wearing parade dress uniforms, were joined by officers from the Park Service and numerous local police and sheriffs departments. They stood at attention in solemn ranks during the service, then paid their final respects with a salute as Trooper Henderson’s flag-draped casket was carried out of the chapel and down th$ steps past an honor guard.
Trooper Henderson, 43, was killed early last Tuesday morning when a tractor-trailer ran over his cruiser as it sat on the shoulder of Interstate 66 near Linden in Warren County. According to Lt. J. P, Henries, the trooper had stopped another vehicle and had his blue emergency lights flashing at the time of the accident. ... Two of the four occupants of the other vehicle were seriously injured, two others sustained minor injuries.
