What a beautiful day for opening day of trout season. In all the years of many opening days for trout seasons since I arrived in Virginia in 1956,1 can’t ever remember a better day.
On past opening days I’ve seen rain, wind, sleet, snow, low water, high water, and muddy water. But if a dedicated trout fisherman had placed an order for a perfect opening day’s weather and stream conditions, this past Saturday would have been the product.
Most of the opening day anglers I talked with said that in spite of large crowds, tangled lines, and a few dunkings from the slick rocks, most caught a few fish, some limits were taken, and everyone had great fun and a most enjoyable day.
Statewide weather was good to great, and all indications are that spring fishing is in full swing. With continuing stocking of trout, and plenty of water in the streams, rivers and lakes, trout fishermen could have a banner year.
This past week the Virginia Commission on Game and Inland Fisheries conducted meetings to determine some limits and length of seasons for the hunting seasons of 1988-89 and 1989-90. When the new seasons and limits are voted into law, I will let you know how we made out.
On a more local basis, many area anglers have been taking advantage of the spring frenzy. *
My friend, Walter Metts of Woodbridge, caught a limit of trout Saturday before noon. He fished elbow to elbow with many other trout fishermen on Passage Creek in Fort Valley and found plenty of trout in the 8 to 12-inch range and a few nice rainbows up to 14 inches.
Chuck Fredrikson of Alexandria caught 30 crappie up to 1V% pounds at Lake Anna. He caught most of the crappie on a lure called the roadrunner.
Jim Duncan of Fairfax caught five bass totalling 17 pounds and a 2V«-pound chain pickeral, also in Lake Anna.
