Assistant superintendent Tom Campbell reported on Tuesday that the Brunswick Correctional System does exterior and interior painting, refurbishing and engine replacement. “They totally redo buses . . . I’m certainly not suggesting that the board go this route but I was asked to get this information,” said Mr. Campbell, adding that he had no figures as yet on the savings this would bring over purchase of new buses.
Looking ahead to expected cuts by the Board of Supervisors, Mr. Oliver noted, “we’ll have a chance to learn more about that when this budget comes back from Little Washington!”
The board had a hint on Tuesday of the direction that the supervisors will take. Their administrative assistant, John McCarthy, noted that “fractured positions,” such as special service coordinator’s Pam Rowe, can be eliminated with the various duties - overseeing special education and the gifted and talented programs - parcelled out to other administrators. “That’s the sort of thing that other school divisions are doing.” With the continuing decline of federal support for the special education entitlement programs, Ms. Rowe’s job has a built-in demand for more county funds above and beyond the regular pay increases given other school system employees, Mr. McCarthy noted. “That's the bitter
