After some time, Mr. Veeney testified, Ms. Fuller and a friend, Debbie Racer, came down the lane in Ms. Racer’s car and picked him up. He asked them to give him a ride to Culpeper, but Ms. Fuller said she had to take her daughter to her grandmother’s house in Gid Brown Hollow first.
As they drove past the Pine Knot, he said, Albert Gatewood stood in the middle of the road, on the yellow line, and waved his arms, trying to flag down the car. Ms. Racer didn’t stop.
According to testimony, the three headed for Vivian Gatewood’s home in Gid Brown Hollow. The two women left Mr. Veeney at the bottom of the driveway before going inside, where Ms. Fuller put her ■daughter to bed. At that point, Mr. Veeney testified, a pickup drove up the driveway.
Ms. Fuller testified that the pickup was driven by Reginald Gatewood, and that Albert Gatewood was riding in it. He came inside and "looked through the house for Jerome ... He was upset,” Ms. Fuller said. She said that they then went back outside, where she told Reginald to take Albert home. They got in the truck and left.
The women waited for a few minutes, then left Mrs. Gatewood’s house and picked up Mr. Veeney at the base of the driveway. They then drove out of the hollow on Rt. 622, intending to take Mr. Veeney to his home in Culpeper, Ms. Fuller testified.
About two miles down the road, according to Mr. Veeney’s testimony, a pickup truck with its lights on blocked the road, forcing Ms.
