To the editor:
Well, I was ready to leave the county, I was so ashamed of Rappahannock County — that the county school head man was allowed to cancel the Kancouran performance. Rappahannock County has lots of left and right wing liberals, but no one takes immediate action - everyone accepts and knows racism is carried on daily.
It was hard enough to watch a barefoot ceremonial dancer have to pull a huge nail out of the dance floor.
Performing with honor, one ceremonial dancer had to leave the stage to go look for a hammer. I mean, break a rhythm to go look for a hammer backstage to pull a nail out with a splinter sticking up.
I felt a dishonor had been done to a people who came here to share a culture that isn’t white. They were not allowed to be with white kids, as well as all kids, to teach.
Rappahannock County invited Kancouran to appear and teach, share and give totally and we showed them our racism.
Music, art, dance and some ceremonies should be shared with all people.
