Albert Wayne Gatewood, 29, of Front Royal, was found guilty in Rappahannock County Circuit Court on TTiursday of two felony charges of abduction and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. The jury found him innocent of a third, misdemeanor charge, destruction of private property.
Gatewood was sentenced to 90 days in jail and a $500 fine on the abduction charge. The firearms charge carries a mandatory two-year sentence. It cannot be modified or suspended.
The charges stemmed from an incident which took place last October 12 and 13, involving Gatewood and Jerome Veeney, of Culpeper, which began during the evening of Oct. 12 at the Pine Knot Inn on Rt. 211 and ended in the early morning hours of Oct. 13 on Rt. 622 in Gid Brown Hollow, near the Promised Land Baptist Church.
According to Mr. Veeney’s testimony, he came to the Pine Knot Inn late that afternoon with Wanda Sue Fuller. Ms. Fuller testified she is Albert Gatewood’s ex-girlfriend and he is the father of her daughter.
Several of his friends from Culpeper were also there, Mr. Veeney said. They stayed, drinking and talking, until between 9 and 10 p.m., when Ms. Fuller suggested “it was best they leave - there’s going to be trouble.”
When they left, a disturbance occurred between Mr. Veeney and several of the other patrons, including Gatewood’s brother Reginald. During that disturbance, Mr. Veeney testified, Ms. Fuller told him to go wait at his car, which he did, but realized he had lost his car keys.
She returned to the Pine Knot to look for the keys while he stayed at the car.
