There’s a “sign” at the comer of the courthouse quadrangle that shouts “That’s all folks! Winter is gone!”
Spelled out in a bright burst of color, it heralds the departure of sleet, snow and cold and the arrival of glorious spring. Without neon, without big flashing letters, the message is delivered. It comes courtesy of the Rappahannock County Garden Club’s courthouse beautification project.
When the Garden Club ladies first proposed the work to the supervisors and won their endorsement for the project, we let the effort slip by without comment. And we hardly noticed when volunteers braved a cold rain to put plants into the ground.
Now, better late than never, we say thank you.
Thank you, members of the Rappahannock Garden Club, for the beautiful arrangement of golden and purple crocuses. Thank you for the plantings of white pine and spruce that will grow to screen the unsightly - but necessary - chain link fence surrounding the jail’s exercise yard. Thank you for the pyracantha, the junipers and the landscaping around the Civil War Memorial. Thank you for the flower boxes that make the handsome red brick buildings even more attractive. Thank you for the stone benches that so fittingly turn the courthouse yard into a front stoop where folks can congregate and chat.
As the seat of our local government, the courthouse quadrangle should symbolize the county just as the Capitol 5. and its grounds symbolize the nation. Ladies of the Garden ~ Club, you’ve helped make this symbol as lovely as the rest of beautiful Rappahannock. '—
