He said he entered the race, albeit reluctantly, because he felt that “the critical, substantive issues are not being presented for judgement by the voters.” And, he added, “I continue to be concerned with the general drive to force politics into the framework of the two major parties.”
Mr. McCarthy described the Minnesota tradition of the Farmer-Labor Party, as well as the Progressive Party in Wisconsin. “Those parties have had real impact, and I think that the same thing is possible at the national level,” he said.
The senator’s announcement marks his fourth run for the presidency. He is best known for his attempt in 1968, known as “The Children’s Campaign,” when he found strength among young voters disenchanted with the Vietnam War. President Lyndon Johnson narrowly defeated him in the New Hampshire primary in early March 1968, and shortly after decided not to seek reelection.
