Mr. McCarthy was defeated by Sen. Hubert Humphrey for the Democratic nomination that summer at the convention in Chicago, an event remembered as much for the riots outside in the streets as for the political fracas inside the convention hall.
He also ran for president as an independent in 1972 and 1976.
He said he had received calls earlier this year from supporters urging him to run in the Democratic primaries, but he refused. “I wasn’t interested in that kind of a fight,” he said Friday.
Then, he continued, he was encouraged to run again as an independent. Again, he professed reluctance to enter, saying, “I’ve done that before, and I won’t do it unless there’s some good to come out of it.”
Finally, as he watched the presidential primary process wind down, winnowing out candidates until the nominations are now all but decided, Mr. McCarthy decided that some good could be done. “I looked at the parties, at their candidates, and I decided that what I consider the critical issues are not going to be addressed. If one can do that with some effectiveness, then we ought to give it a try.”
