There were no nominations from the floor during the public hearing, which was attended by only three county residents, one of whom was Mrs. Butler.
Budget hearing draws silence
A second public hearing on Monday evening for public comment on the proposed county budget brought none. A request from board Chairman Hubert Gilkey for comments or questions brought no response from the three residents in the audience.
“It’s a good thing that you have these hearings at night so that people can come,” Clerk Diane Bruce quipped.
Accountant Wally Cox told the board that the State Compensation Board has not yet provided figures for the salaries paid by them, which includes the Sheriffs Department dispatchers. The board is considering a salary supplement for them to cover their dual role as jail matrons, but has postponed a decision until the Compensation Board fixes the salary scale.
Mr. Cox suggested that the board set a meeting for the last week in June to adopt the budget, “at which time I hope we can include all the figures.”
The supervisors set Monday, June 27, as the date for a vote on the School Board nominations and for adoption of the budget. The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the Courthouse.
