“All you need is a warm loving home,” Marie said, sitting in her living room with her “son,” Frank and talking about how her family has made their “exchange year” a success. Love “Is all that I require and,” she said with a warm smile to her Spanish son, “we have a little extra.”
While the Davis family has no teen-age boys, they have earlier experience with “teen-age sons” in a sense, as Marie’s nephew lived with the family for a year several years prior to Frank’s stay.
Prior experience is not a requirement for participation in the exchange program, though.
“It’s a family living experience,” Youth for Understanding area representative Pat Helmer said, explaining “the family experience is first, school is second and friends, parties and travel after that.”
Speaking from personal experience — as her Woodville-based family has hosted 10 exchange students since 1979 — Ms. Helmer said that even though an exchange student is a challenge for a family, it can be growing experience for both the family and the student.
For'the Davis family it has been enlightening.
