Clients learn that birth control pills provide good protection against pregnancy but are useless against STDs and AIDs. They learn the advantages and disadvantages of various methods of birth control, and they learn about the symptoms and treatment of STDs. Besides the information and advice provided through the clinics, the Health Department has several informative booklets available for clients and the general public.
Sexually transmitted diseases and AIDS are apparently less of a problem for Rappahannock’s sexually active teens than unplanned pregnancy, but Mrs. Facchina said that with STDs increasing rapidly in the country as a whole, “the statistics may be deceptively low.” In 1988 there were 65 cases of venereal disease in the district as a whole and one case of gonorrhea in Rappahannock. At that time chlamydia and HIV infection were not reportable, she said. Now they are.
“We’ve picked up several cases of chlamydia this year through the family planning clinics,” she said. “It is difficult to obtain a current accurate number of cases.” The total number of clinically diagnosed AIDS cases in the district through June,
