When writing a check at the grocery or department store, we are conditioned to pull out two forms of identification. Often, one piece of identification requested is a credit card.

On July 1, it w ill no longer be legal for a retailer to copy the number and expiration date from your credit card.

If the retailer asks to see it, you may show that you have a credit card but no information from the card can be recorded.

This is a protection for the con» sumer. When the retailer records credit card information on your check, there is a danger that someone in the long chain of people that handle that check could use the information to charge something to your credit card without your knowledge.

Since retailers will not be able to use credit cards, you will need to be sure that you have two other forms of identification. A Virginia driver’s license or a Virginia non-driver identification is a good choice.

A second identification could be an identification card from your employer, an insurance card, a birth certificate card, a voter registration card, or a passport. Retailers may accept a credit card that you show, but they cannot copy any of the information.

Retailers may require that you apply for a check cashing card that they issue. This will require that you give them information about your checking account and employment data. The retailer has the right to refuse to accept checks or only accept • checks from those who have the retailer’s check cashing card.

Credit card fraud is on the rise. ' This is one of the reasons that the ' new law was passed. If someone has

your credit card number and expira- j tion date, it is relatively easy to v charge by phone.

Take steps to keep your card number private. Ask the retail clerk for the carbons from the charge card slips when you charge something.
