Rappahannock News Contributing Writer Astros 5, Orioles 4
On Tuesday, June 5, the Astros bumped the Orioles from first place in the Bambino Division with a 5-4 victory at Stuart Field in Amissville.
Andy Grimsley pitched a strong game for the Astros as he struck out 14 batters and helped his own cause at the plate.
Wally Sheads, Anthony Hawkins and Stephen Mills contributed hot bats to support Grimsley’s fine pitching as Hawkins collected a triple and a double on the evening.
This was the third and final game between these two teams for the season, and the margin of victory for all three games totalled only five runs. It is an excellent example of the competitive spirit of the local teams.
Red Sox 26, Blazers 20
Also on June 5, the Western Divison’s Red Sox defeated the Amissville Blazers 26-20 at Horseshoe Hills field.
Walks and runs were the order of the day as the Red Sox boosted their record to 2-7, while the Blazers fell to 2-7.
Everyone contributed in this five-inning walk-a-thon, as every member of both teams crossed the plate at least once.
Yankees 12, Red Sox 3
On Friday, June 8, the Yankees improved their record to 8-1 with a convincing victory over the Red Sox at Horseshoe Hills Field in Sperryville.
Scotty Updike had three hits, with Jeff Atkins, Mark Jenkins and Donald Dorrell each collecting another two.
