Past studies have shown more than 40 percent of the eye iiyuries caused by fireworks left permanent damage. Half of those injured were children. In another study, spectators were victims in 25 percent of the incidents.
Of particular concern are the Class C devices which are legal in Virginia. These devices are mistakenly thought to be of little danger and thus widely misused. These include firecrackers, smoke bombs, bottle rockets and sparklers. Studies have cited sparklers as being the cause of more than half of all reported iiyuries, and bottle rockets as being responsible for a third of the eye iiyuries.
“We suggest that people mark Independence Day by eiyoying fireworks at a public display,” Frank Carlomango says. “The sight of someone you care about just might depend on it.”
