In the fifth, Jeff Atkins singled, Alan Groves walked and Donald Don-ell tripled, driving in two runs. Dorrell later scored on Tim O’Meara’s single as the Yankees stretched their lead to 6-0.
Dorrell kept the Orioles scoreless when he came on in relief in the sixth inning to preserve the win for starter Alan Groves.
The Yankees’ pitching staff allowed only one hit for the second game in a row as excellent infield play from Julius Norwood and Mark Jenkins helped to quiet the Orioles’ bats. With the bats silent, the Orioles turned to attempted larceny on the basepaths, but catcher Jeff Atkins stopped that threat cold, throwing out four Oriole baserunners.
The Yankees’ record is now 9-1, while the Orioles fell to 7-3.
Josh Hitt pitched another fine game for the Orioles, allowing only five hits while striking out 10 batters in a nevertheless losing effort.
With this victory over the Orioles, the Yankees clinched the league title in the Bambino Division.

The Astros bats were hot until the Yankees realized they were in a fight and decided to dig in and produce at the plate.
Down 1-0 in the third, the Yankees scored four times and tallied six more runs in the fourth on home runs by Jeff Atkins and Donald Dorrell. Their round trippers were complemented by timely hitting from Mark Jenkins, Julius Norwood and Keith Menefee.
