Last weekend was a utility company’s nightmare in Piedmont Virginia, as wet snow and ice snapped trees and broke power lines, causing power outages and closing roads.
Rappahannock Electric Cooperative reported that more than 7,000 customers were without power at the height of the storm Friday evening, including a majority of the company’s 700-plus Rappahannock County customers. . The difficulty began on Thursday night when up to six inches of wet snow fell on the county. Early Friday morning, the snow turned to sleet and freezing rain, which continued falling for much of the day.
